First Visual Novel Game I played back then, I loved it, and was hooked onto it i even 100% it. Works exactly like the original.. The game is just...1.6 hours of boring, tedious and cliche prologue, I have really no idea what's afterwards and I don't want to at this point.Music is mildly forgetable and graphics... well for a 11 pound game it's pretty♥♥♥♥♥♥Oh and the screenshots you see above? The "full size"? Prepare to play in a window of that size or have that streched out on full screen.Only merit is that most lines in the prologue were voiced though I have no idea about the rest of the game.. The beginning of the story can drag a bit, but the middle and endings makes it worth while.. It\'s pretty cool.. The story is a big focus in a game like this. Everyone and their mom has written something about it, so if you're interested in that, check out someone else's review. What I'm going to focus on is the actual gameplay.I'm about halfway done throwing a guide together for the missions and mechanics of the game as of writing this review, so I won't go too much into what strategies are optimal or anything like that, here.I would reckon that if you're not familiar with permadeath strategy games a-la X-com and fire emblem, you WILL have trouble. The game will make you pay for every mistake you make, and there's very little foreshadowing on what you need to have and when. There will be times where the game spits an enemy at you with a spell too high for you to counter without you having any ability to see it coming. Your whole squad will eat♥♥♥♥♥and you'll get very familiar with the game over screen by the end of your first playthrough. SAVE OFTEN. S A V E O F T E N. I can't say this enough. Experimentation is key to success here, and sometimes things don't work out. Losing lots of progress sucks, and there's 50 save slots so go nuts.In terms of progression, there's no indication of who gets what spell at what level. Check the forums for a Google Doc which can help guide your character growth if you don't feel like experimenting. The game uses negative feedback rather than positive to get you to try your best. There's big rewards for winning in a timely manner, and failing to do so can make it difficult to progress later on.One thing the game does an AWFUL job of telling you is that every 10 levels your characters get a class-up, and these class-ups can make the game a LOT easier. The details for this are in the Dakkodango guide for the game, so make sure to take a look at it.There's all sorts of hidden stuff in the game that really doesn't feel very useful until after normal mode. Most of the guardians will eviscerate you if you bother to face them when they first pop up (but are pretty manageable at the end of the playthrough), and mana crystals aren't worth your time early on.The game gives you more characters than you can use after a certain point, and inevitably a few are going to get sidelined. A lot of the best characters don't really show their utility up front, and require heavy investment to really shine. Failing to invest wisely in your characters can cause a lot of anguish. This game is fun, but the difficulty mainly comes from a lack of polish. Going in blind is how I did it when I played the fan-translation of it over 8 years ago, and there's definitely fun to be had that way, but a lot of people don't groove with that.If you've read this far, here's a big tip: The "L" key will skip combat sequences in game. It works during battles during cutscenes, too, so don't hesitate to take advantage of it.. The screenshots and description make this sound like some kind of story-heavy tactical RPG - like any number of Atlas games, or the Fire Emblem series. Well, I just spent two and a half hours reading to get to a part of the game where I could actually do any tactical battling. During that period, I only had a few decision points and I have seen no sign that any of them mattered. Once I did get to the battle, I found it ot be simultaneously too easy and too hard. * Too easy, because if you play defensively then you can basically be an invincible turtle. And then your post-battle score will be crap.* Too hard, because if you push ahead fast you risk either running out of skill uses or you'll mess up your formation and get wiped out.All this might be forgivable if the writing were good, or the visuals were better. Neither of those holds true. The protagonist/narrator repeatedly breaks the "show, don't tell" rule when it comes to describing the people around him. Said people are kinda boring and archetypal, when they aren't outright weird. And whenever anything visually interesting is happening outside the context of a battle, the game rarely bothers to give you more than a token description against a dull image of the setting or a plain black background. I can see the potential here. I can see how complex and interesting battles could be built with this system. I can see how a compelling narrative about family and suffering under oppression could be told with these characters. I can imagine a really cool anime being made from these visual designs and action sequences. But I feel that potential has not been realized.Maybe it gets better later on, but I cannot be arsed to find out.(Also, as a matter of personal preference, I dislike the art style. It's hard for me to get engaged by all the cutesy stuff that happens with the various girls in the game when they all look like inhuman mutants - especially the smaller ones. And that part where an underage girl jumped me in the bath while calling me "Papa!" was just weird.). Didnt expect much at first, but it was amazing when you get past the art. Interesting battle mechanics and well written. An extremely awesome start to the game so far! The soundtrack is amazing! The characters all seem to have quite their own personality and vibe about them. The story is developing very nicely, and I love how the original japanese voice acting is incorporated into it for each of the characters. The subtitles are visually appealing and very well-structured. Definitely a game I would recommend checking out if interested in the Visual Novel & RPG genre..
